Everyone needs an Origin Story!

It all began in a vibrant hostel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The air was filled with the rhythm of samba and the laughter of travelers from every corner of the globe. Amid the colorful chaos, we met over a dirty joke in a dorm room filled with bunk beds. What started as a casual conversation and day trips to must-see spots in the city escalated into emails and hours-long phone conversations, and an unexpected realization of how much we had in common.

We’re Joanne and Gavin—partners in life, adventure, and now, storytelling. For almost two decades, we’ve shared a love for exploring the world’s hidden corners, from bustling city streets to tranquil mountaintops.

Losing loved ones too early taught us a powerful lesson: life is fleeting, and tomorrow is not promised. We didn’t want to wait for "someday" to chase our dreams of seeing the world. For us, travel has grown into something much deeper: a way to connect with new cultures, challenge ourselves, and capture the world's beauty through stories and images.

In our 40s now, we’ve traveled to over 30 countries, hiked countless trails, and shared meals with strangers who became friends, travel partners, and reasons to visit far-off locales. Along the way, we’ve learned to navigate the twists and turns of unfamiliar paths, embraced detours that led to unexpected treasures, and discovered the joys of venturing off the beaten path. But for every breathtaking sunrise or thrilling adventure, we’ve also experienced the bumps in the road: missed flights, language barriers, and those moments when the GPS insists we’re in the middle of the ocean. Those experiences are always the ones that get told the most!

Through "LimKin Travel," we aim to inspire, challenge your mindset, and show you it can be done!  You’ll find guides to the best food, honest reviews of travel gear, and our thoughts on how to travel.

As we embark on this journey, we’re excited to connect with fellow adventurers, dreamers, and armchair travelers. Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or planning your first trip, we hope our stories inspire you to embrace the spirit of exploration and create your memories to treasure.

So here’s to the road ahead, to the wonders we’ve yet to discover, and to the stories we’ll share along the way. Pack your bags (or just your imagination) and join us—the adventure begins now!

Which Way Do We Go?

Deciding which direction to travel around the world is daunting. With so many international trips waiting, balancing practical considerations with personal goals when mapping out the journey. Here, we will share how we are approaching this decision—whether we will be chasing sunshine, learning Spanish, or connecting with family in Asia.

  1. Consider the Weather
The weather will always be a big factor for us, as it can make or break an experience. When we plan our trip in the Northern Hemisphere, we will consider heading east or west to enjoy Europe’s summer before Southeast Asia’s dry season in November. Since we also love cooler climates, we will think about a southern route through New Zealand or Patagonia during their winter. Researching the best times to visit our must-see destinations will help us avoid rainy seasons, extreme heat, and freezing winters.
  2. Align with Your Goals
We will ask ourselves, what do we want to achieve? For us, learning Spanish will be a major goal, so we could decide a westward route through Latin America makes the most sense. Immersing ourselves in Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico and Argentina will feel like the perfect way to combine language learning with adventure. Asia’s vibrant cultures and cuisines are an important draw, we might head east through Europe and the Middle East before reaching family in Asia. Tailoring the route to our goals will make the journey more meaningful.
  3. Factor in Family and Friends
Reconnecting with family will always be a priority for us, so we will factor that into our plans. Since we have family in Asia, starting eastward could allow us to visit them early on, which will set a meaningful tone for the rest of our travels.
  4. Budget and Logistics
Budget and logistics will also play a big role in shaping our direction. Flights heading west across the Pacific or east to Europe will often vary in cost depending on the season. Some regions will be easier to navigate by train or bus, which will make overland travel more affordable and convenient. We will also research visa requirements and travel restrictions to ensure we don’t run into any surprises along the way.
  5. Follow Your Curiosity
Ultimately, following our excitement will be the best way to finalize our decision. There isn't a right or wrong way to travel the world—just the path that feels right for you.
